Misleading content in model names and model cards

The model name is diffusiongemma-26B-A4B-it, and the model card states that it activates 8 experts using MoE. However, the technical report clearly states that 84 experts will be activated, not 8. Therefore, I believe the model's name and model cards are highly misleading.

Thanks for raising this! The difference you see relate to two different scopes:

  • Per-token routing (8 active experts per token / A4B): By standard MoE convention, A4B (~3.8B active parameters) and top-k = 8 refer to per-token activation. Every individual token in DiffusionGemma is routed to 8 experts out of 128 (plus 1 shared expert), identical to the Gemma 4 26B A4B architecture.
  • Canvas-level unique experts (~84 unique experts per 256-token canvas): Because DiffusionGemma denoises a block of 256 tokens in parallel on each forward pass (rather than 1 token at a time), each of the 256 tokens independently selects 8 experts. Across all 256 tokens in a canvas, the union of unique experts touched per layer averages ~84 out of 128 on PG-19 (the same effect seen in standard autoregressive MoE models during prefill, batched decoding, or speculative decoding verification). Figure 11 highlights this to explain HBM-to-SRAM memory bandwidth during a 256-token step (4.3× MoE kernel time to process 256× as many tokens).
